Yellapur: Two people, including a pregnant woman, died on the spot, while a 17-year-old student succumbed on the way to KIMS Hospital, when a huge tree uprooted and fell on them. Three children sustained serious injuries and were rushed to KIMS Hospital, Hubballi.

According to sources, the accident took place on Monday evening when children were returning home from the Anganwadi with the woman.

A huge tree suddenly collapsed, under which Savitri Babu Kharat (28), a pregnant woman, along with four others were trapped. By the time Savitri was rescued from beneath the tree, she had already succumbed to her injuries. The others were immediately shifted to the hospital in critical condition. Among them, 17-year-old Class 10 student Swati Babu Kharat died on the way to Hubballi in the ambulance.

Sources said that at the time of the incident, Savitri, her daughter, and six other children were present. Fortunately, three of them escaped with minor injuries.

The three seriously injured children received initial treatment at Yellapur Government Hospital before being referred to KIMS Hospital, Hubballi, for advanced care.
