Bhatkal: A tragic road accident on the Shiroor national highway in neighbouring Udupi district claimed the life of an auto-rickshaw driver on Saturday afternoon after a speeding mini lorry rammed into his vehicle from behind.
The deceased has been identified as Kara Ilyas (48), a resident near Noorani Masjid in Shiroor. According to police, Ilyas was returning after dropping his relative at Green Valley School when a mini lorry heading from Udupi towards Ankola, after unloading fish, hit his auto-rickshaw from the rear.
The impact threw Ilyas out of the rickshaw, causing his head to hit the road divider, leading to his instant death. The incident occurred around 12 noon near Ayesha Masjid on the Shiroor stretch of National Highway 66.
Upon receiving information, Byndoor police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to the Byndoor government hospital mortuary. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family on Saturday evening. Later, at around 11 p.m., funeral prayers were held, and the burial took place at the Shiroor graveyard.
A case has been registered at the Byndoor police station, and police are investigating the case.
