Karwar: IMD issues high-wind alert for coastal Karnataka; Fishermen advised to stay ashore

Karwar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Bengaluru, have issued a high-wind alert for the coastal region, warning of possible cyclonic activity in the Bay of Bengal due to a drop in atmospheric pressure.

According to Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority Chairperson Lakshmi Priya K., unstable weather conditions are expected to bring strong winds at speeds of 40–60 kmph over the next 24 hours. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until further notice and to resume fishing only after updated forecasts permit.

The public has also been urged to avoid visiting beaches, rivers, and other water bodies during this period. Tourists and residents living along riverbanks are warned of the possibility of sudden flooding, as rivers in the district are already flowing above danger levels. Those in vulnerable areas, such as near dangerous trees, hill slopes, or flood-prone zones, are advised to move to safer locations immediately.

Parents have been requested to ensure children do not approach the seashore, and no recreational activities should be organised along the coast.

For emergencies, a 24×7 control room has been set up, which can be contacted on the toll-free number 08382-229857 or WhatsApp 9483511015.
