Bhatkal: The government has a responsibility to ensure the safety of journalists working for social justice, senior writer Syed Zamirulla Sharief said while addressing a Press Day programme in Bhatkal on Wednesday.
Speaking after inaugurating the event organised by the Bhatkal Taluka Working Journalists' Association at New English PU College, Sharief said newspapers continue to play a crucial role in informing society about important developments and highlighting issues of justice and injustice.
He urged students to develop the habit of reading newspapers, saying it enhances knowledge and keeps them informed about current affairs.
Praising the role of journalists in Bhatkal, Sharief said media persons in the communally sensitive town have been carrying out their professional responsibilities with commitment and have contributed significantly to maintaining peace and communal harmony.
Maruti Naik, Vice-President of the Uttara Kannada District Working Journalists' Association, said the newspaper industry has retained its relevance despite growing competition from digital media.
College Principal Veerendra Shanbhag said newspapers remain vital in creating an informed and socially aware citizenry.
The programme, presided over by association president Mohan Naik, also felicitated newspaper distributor Manjunath Devadiga and senior yoga teacher Govinda Guruji for their contributions.
