Bhatkal: Torrential rains disrupt normal life; Over 3000 mm rainfall recorded in two months

Bhatkal: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past several days has severely disrupted normal life in Bhatkal and surrounding areas. According to official reports, the region has recorded more than 3000 mm of rainfall in the last two months, a figure believed to be the highest in the past 50 years.

The relentless downpour has turned several roads into virtual streams, significantly hampering vehicular movement. Key areas such as Shamsuddin Circle, Tenginagundi Cross, and sections of National Highway 66 have been particularly affected, with waterlogging making it difficult for vehicles to pass. Pedestrians, especially school and college students, are also facing serious commuting challenges.

According to the Meteorological Department, 136.4 mm of rainfall was recorded in Bhatkal between 8 a.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday. The total rainfall so far this year has reached 3290 mm — with nearly two months still remaining in the monsoon season. If the current trend continues, authorities fear the situation could further deteriorate in the coming weeks.

The water level in local rivers such as Kadvin Katte, Sarabi, and Chautani has risen considerably, prompting officials to issue alerts to residents living near riverbanks, advising them to remain on high alert. Meanwhile, rough sea conditions and high tidal waves have caused small fishing boats to capsize, leading to a temporary suspension of fishing activities.

Locals point out that waterlogging on NH-66 during the monsoon is a long-standing issue. Despite recurring complaints over the past decade, no permanent solution has been implemented. Neither the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) nor the Bhatkal Town Municipal Council has taken effective or sustainable measures to resolve the problem. Roads connecting Venkatapur to Hanifabad, along with several internal streets, remain in poor and damaged condition, leaving residents with no choice but to await administrative intervention.
