Mysuru: Three-member family dies by suicide; police file abetment case

Mysuru: A 21-year-old woman and her parents allegedly died by suicide on Monday following alleged harassment by a man who was pressuring her to marry him, police said.

The deceased were identified as Rakshita, her mother Nagaratna (44), and father Shivanna (54), they said.

Police said the family of three allegedly consumed poison at their home in Kempainahundi village in Mysuru district, leaving behind a death note holding Ullas Gowda responsible for their deaths.

According to the police, Rakshita was engaged to another man and her wedding was scheduled for June 24. In her death note, she stated that Gowda had proposed to her, but she had rejected his proposal in the presence of her parents.

Gowda, who claimed to be in love with her, allegedly continued to harass her and pressure her parents to marry her to him despite her engagement, a senior police officer said.

On the night of June 21, her parents called Gowda and his parents to their house and warned him. They also got all messages and photographs related to Rakshita deleted from his mobile phone, the officer said.

Police said Gowda had allegedly retained some photographs. Soon after returning home, he allegedly sent them to the man Rakshita was engaged to marry, following which the groom’s parents arrived at the family’s house, and the matter escalated.

Following these developments, Rakshita and her parents allegedly died by suicide.

A case of abetment of suicide has been registered against Gowda, who has been absconding since the incident, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.
