The West Bengal government on Tuesday urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for exemption of GST and customs duty on essential drugs, vaccines and equipment required for the treatment of Covid-19.
In a letter to Sitharaman, state Finance Minister Amit Mitra also thanked her for convening the "much awaited" 43rd meeting of the GST Council on Friday.

Cyclone Yaas intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening, India Meteorological Department Director General M Mohapatra said.
The IMD has also issued a red-coded warning alert to the Odisha and West Bengal coasts.
"The severe cyclonic storm 'Yaas' (pronounced as 'Yass') over northwest and Bay of Bengal intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm," Mohapatra said.

A total of over 20 lakh COVID-19 related recoveries have been recorded in Karnataka so far, as the state on Tuesday reported 38,224 new discharges, continuing to outnumber the fresh cases, which was at 22,758, the health department said on Tuesday.
The state logged 588 more deaths, taking the toll to 26,399, while the caseload stood at 24,72,973.

The Karnataka government has constituted a 16-member Special Task Force for taking measures to eliminate single use plastic in the state.
The meetings of the task force will be convened once in two months, an order said, adding, the Chairperson may co-opt members as required.
